ANALYSIS OF GOVERNMENT RESPONSES ON THE ESCALATION OF FARMER-HERDERS CONFLICT IN SOUTHERN KADUNA 2011-2019

Abstract

Violent Conflict is not a new phenomenon in Nigeria, thus, its recent escalation between the rearing and farming communities in Kaduna state 2011-2019 has become major challenges that is yet to receive due attention. The response of the previous government was not enough inadequate. This gave rise to the escalation of the conflicts in the state. This therefore prompted the researcher and make it necessary to further investigate how the crises can be curtailed apprehended once and for all by the present government in place. Methodologically, the study explored the dynamic wave of government responses through qualitative design method. In-depth face to face interview and focus group discussion (fGD) were conducted with 29 participants in the affected area of the state. Documentaries and various reports were also utilised for triangulation of data using MAXQDA 2018 software for thematic analysis. Attitudes. Behaviour and contradictions variables of ABC Galtonian triangle model was adopted for interpretation. The findings show that several attitudinal as well as behavioural factors had influenced the approach of government in responding to the crises in the state. Lack of effective response in protecting lives and property such as prevention/early warning system signal emerged central in failure to apprehend the situation.
