Abstract

This study assesses the impact of conditional cash transfer programme on poverty alleviation in Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State. The survey research method was adopted and two hypotheses were formulated in this study. The instrument for data collection was quantitative (structured questionnaire). The population of the study comprises 4000 beneficiaries of the conditional cash transfer in the twelve (12) political wards in the local government area from 2017-2021. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were used to select 506 respondents. The hypotheses were tested using Chi-square method to determine the relationship between dependent and independent variables. The findings revealed that conditional cash transfer scheme have significant relationship with poverty alleviation in terms of    increase in school enrolment of  pupils and had tremendously helped in improving health services utilization as most of the beneficiaries of this programme were able to access health facilities better than before the CCT intervention programme. On the basis of the paper concludes that CCT has accomplished its objective of mitigating hardship among the target beneficiaries. It is on that premise that the study recommends that the government should increase the number of household beneficiaries for wider coverage and spread as well as establish more health facilities in the rural areas.
